  1. Nanoseconds have always been accessible in python if you were willing to use system specific calls. For windows, you could use the windows api to use QueryPerformanceFrequency and QueryPerformanceCounter. For *nix I believe there's a way to get the counter using posix RDTSC queries but I'm not sure of the specifics.

  2. Also…. how do they make it faster? Are they re-writing parts in C (I thought the standard library was already in C?) Or are they just making the code more efficient via constructing more efficient code?
